IN THIS age of global warming and hosepipe bans, Wimbledon is doing all it can to conserve water. Draconian measures have reduced consumption by 33 per cent, though turning off the water to the press loos and the players' showers on Tuesday, leaving Andy Murray to face the press with the sweat of his labours still pouring from his brow, did seem to be taking things a bit far.
By using computer-controlled sprinkler systems, drought- resistant plants and water-retaining pellets in the soil, the All England Club are conserving supplies and doing their bit for the environment. Even the 200-strong fleet of courtesy cars and vans are to be washed by bucket and sponge, and only when absolutely necessary.
