I'M NOT going to write about Best Mate. I'm still too choked. Arkle will always be Himself, the best of the past. But we need to invent a word to describe Best Mate and what he means to every racing fan - the feeling that we own a tiny bit of his greatness. I know it's not grammatical but what about Ourself?
Because what Best Mate and Jim Culloty did on Thursday was to display all the courage, skill and grace to which humans and horses can aspire. They held up a mirror to the best bits of ourselves.
