Summary
We thought that if we said it quietly enough maybe nobody would hear us. We were committing a crime against Scottish sensibilities. We were saying we didn't find Billy Connolly that funny any more. It's on a par with saying you don't like Irn-Bru, I know, but it's an opinion that felt more pertinent this week. Connolly, the great chronicler of how the everyday events of a Scottish working-class upbringing can be vein-splittingly annoying and funny at the same, has long since wandered off the live stage with his tailed T-shirt between his legs, and opted for the Palin-esque approach to comedy.
It was in discussing Connolly's new series of journeys around the world that a colleague and I felt the same sense of disloyalty as we screwed up our noses at the prospect of more arm-waving awe at the world around the Big Yin's beard. As an aside, where was he on the Homecoming ad that utilised Sean Connery, Lulu and, erm, Sandi Thom as prodigious talents through whom a call to our diaspora could be made through the medium of song.
