Teach Yourself Gaelic

Summary

Sgeulachd: story

Depending on dialect, it is either pronounced skee-yall-lock or skay-lack, and means any kind of story or tale, including a newspaper or radio news story or a fairy tale. In the modern language, it is a synonym for the shorter word sgeul, which is pronounced skee-yall or skayl. However, sgeul can be used in a common expression where it means something rather different. 'A bheil sgeul air?', pronounced uh vul sgee-yall ur?, is literally 'Is there a tale on him?' It means in effect, 'Is there any sign of him?' or 'Can he be found?'
