EVERY day for the past week Tornado GR4s have roared into the skies above RAF Lossiemouth, their afterburners glowing red, as pilots head out towards the Moray Firth on their regular sorties or training flights. But the burning question on everyone's minds these days in Moray is simple: for how much longer?

At both "Lossie" and in Kinloss 15 miles away - home to the RAF's Nimrod reconnaissance air fleet - the mood is apprehensive. It was from here that the German battleship the Tirpitz was sunk by the legendary Dambusters Squadron during the Second World War. But with David Cameron preparing to unveil fierce cuts to RAF spending on Tuesday this week, the fear is that one or the other could face the axe as part of the strategic defence review.
