WHEN you're Colin Montgomerie and you're asked for your thoughts on Michelle Wie, the only way to go is to plaster a look of wonderment across your face before handing out the tributes until told to stop. The controversy of his Indonesian Shuffle in March appears to have gone away at long last so the last thing Monty needed earlier in the week was to get engaged in a reasoned debate on the subject of the teen prodigy from Hawaii. To do so would run the risk of opprobrium being dumped on his head. Been there, didn't like it much.
Monty was asked what he thought of Wie's desire to play in The Open next year and her oft-stated intention to get on the men's tour as soon as possible. He endorsed the prospect wholeheartedly, as did Phil Mickelson and many others before him. Monty will not have forgotten the demonisation of Vijay Singh when he had the temerity to suggest that ladies (in this particular case Annika Sorenstam) should play on the ladies tour and men should play on the men's. The Scot wasn't going there. After his travails in recent months he wasn't about to get embroiled in another controversy. The only place he was headed was Superlative City.
