Summary


UNTIL it wraps up about a quarter to four today, I won't express a view on whether the early timing of the first Dundee derby is great for us here at Dens. I have no doubts it is great for the SPL programme and great for all those people who champion Scotland's football life outside the Old Firm. In a country where all things surrounding the big two in Glasgow are seized on to an extreme, unhealthy degree our Tannadice encounter will throw a little of the spotlight on clubs and a city that aren't Scotland's biggest. Put it this way, it will be the only football game screened live in this country during the first month of the season which won't involve the Old Firm.

A derby coming as the second competitive 90 minutes of your season does not allow you to field a side you can possibly know inside-out is going to be ideal for the occasion. Mind you, that could probably be said when you play these type of games 20 games into a campaign. In the last few meetings with our neighbours, we have dug out some good results but I don't read anything into the fact that I am unbeaten against United since returning here as manager two seasons ago.
