WHEN Kris Boyd's 71st minute shot bounced into the turf and over goalkeeper Giorgi Lomaia, all of Scotland rose to acclaim the forthcoming goal. But then the ball dipped onto the crossbar and yet again it looked like a case of so near and so far for Scotland.

On second viewing, it actually appeared to be a very good save by the Georgian goalkeeper who got some glove leather on the ball and nudged it onto the crossbar. His efforts had thwarted us, we all thought. The script was written, the end game was planned - plucky Scotland not quite managing to win at Hampden for the umpteenth time.
