The Scottish Premier League of Debt and Survival Rating

Summary

1 RANGERS With an admitted debt figure of GBP 68m, Rangers chairman John McClelland has begun a two-year plan to reduce that sum to a 'manageable' figure of less than GBP 50m. Debts were mainly accrued by buying expensive flops such as Tore Andre Flo and building the Murray Park training facility and youth academy at a cost of GBP 14m. The club's position within David Murray's group ensures its safety. The chances of Rangers going to the wall are nil due to its substantial turnover and the likely reaction from its fans were bankers HBOS to be responsible for the club's demise. Estimated debt: GBP 68m Survival rating: 10/10.

2 DUNDEE Went into administration with debts totalling GBP 20m late last yearafter owners Peter and Jimmy Marr asked their friend Giovanni di Stefano for cash aid but none was forthcoming. Liquidation is still a possibility but administrator Tom Burton says that losses of GBP 100,000 per week have been vastly reduced. Estimated debt: GBP 20m Survival rating: 5/10
