PREVIOUSLY loyal backbench MPs, including Muslim MP Mohammed Sarwar, are turning against Gordon Brown's counter-terrorism plans and are preparing to deliver the first parliamentary defeat of his premiership.

Tensions in Muslim communities are also rising as a result of the plans, Sarwar warned. Opponents said last night they were "reasonably optimistic" they would be able to throw out plans to extend the time terror suspects can be held without charge from 28 to 42 days.
