No matter how hard you try to be objective, context always intrudes. In the interests of honesty, it's only fair to own up to the fact that my trip to Cromlix House near Dunblane came a couple of days after I had eaten at the Michelin-starred Number One Restaurant at Edinburgh's Balmoral Hotel. Comparisons may be invidious, but in the circumstances they are also completely inevitable: two restaurants right at the top of the culinary tree and charging rarefied prices because of that status.
