Summary
EATING out always presents me with a quandary. On one hand, there's the lure of novelty - a temptation encouraged by television gastro-porn, with its promises of ingenious new things than can be done with just a chicken breast, soy sauce and Coco Pops - but it carries the real chance of disappointment. On the other, there's the under-rated virtue of reliability, with the suspicion of being unadventurous.
In my day job as literary editor, I'm lucky enough to be involved in an industry where lunch out is still commonplace. There are few things less likely to endear a new book to me than listening to an author, agent or publisher extol its charms while I'm wondering who thought stuffing a soy-coated chicken fillet with Coco Pops was a good idea.
