FROM his comfortable house in Inverkeilor, Angus, 65-year-old James McDougall surveys a happy scene. A former social work manager, he took early retirement five years ago, secure in the knowledge of a reliable pension scheme which would see him and his wife, Pam, through old age.

Their four children have long flown the nest. Now the couple are free to enjoy the beauty of Scotland's north-east rural heartlands. "It's a wonderful place," says the Dundonian. "Our quality of life is pretty good. We have a couple of holidays a year. We usually go abroad. I drive a reasonably nice car. Everything is OK."

A Race Against Time

It appears the pair are enjoying the kind of retirement of which most couples dream. They are not alone. Blessed with secure pensions and better levels of health than ever, many in their 60s and 70s are revelling in their retirement.

The problem is it can't last. And last week, two major pieces of research showed just how deep the fall could be.
