THE odds on Alex McLeish becoming the next Scotland manager were slashed yesterday, the best available price on him succeeding Walter Smith now a positively skinny 7-4. Bearing in mind McLeish was 7-1 as recently as Wednesday before being cut to 4-1 on Thursday and cut again to 7-2 on Friday a few questions need to be asked of the money that came piling in for him in the last few days. Whose is it? And how knowledgeable are these people?

The SFA won't come up with a short-list until they meet tomorrow so the idea of punters having inside information on the destiny of the job would seem unlikely. David Taylor, the chief executive, says he won't have a clue who his next manager is going to be until he, and 10 other grandees, bash things out in the coming days. Firstly, there's the meeting, then the interview process, then the appointment. They don't want to hang about - the target is to have the new manager and his backroom staff in place by the time Scotland come together at Turnberry on February 4 - but Taylor gave no guarantees that the process would be completed and a manager unveiled much before then.
