CAN you put your hand on your heart and say that when illness strikes, you're a model patient? Whether it's a common cold or a sprained ankle, many of us use illness as an excuse for amateur dramatics. Some take the opposite approach, refusing to admit that anything is wrong, while others head for the internet, determined to self-diagnose. Being a difficult patient is easy, but being a model patient takes work.

The first thing you should ask yourself before you call the surgery is whether you really need to see a doctor. The Royal College of General Practitioners suggests asking a local practice nurse or pharmacist for advice on coughs, colds and other minor health problems. The NHS Direct 24-hour advice service (0845 46 47, www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk) is another good first port of call.
