Summary


MATT Williams was still basking in the glow of his first Six Nations win, against Italy, when he arrived at Stirling University's theatre to announce the side to play Wales. Thirty minutes later he staggered out of the building, ego bruised and bleeding, the victim of an all-out verbal assault by the rugby press.

Scotland's scribblers had tired of Williams' platitudes, and they told him so in no uncertain terms. One hack even interrupted a monologue with: "Just answer the question!"

On Borrowed Time

Williams' highly polished manner cuts no ice with a press who prefer to have their collective heads bitten off rather than be petted with a series of parables. To produce one such Biblical allusion, as Williams did when he first arrived, was bad enough, but to chunter on about Moses and the Red Sea after beating Italy was enough to turn the Pope atheist.
