Nothing to Lose in Toulouse

ONE OF the universal selling points of professional sport is its unpredictability but two years ago Glasgow Rugby stretched credulity thinner than a Walt Disney cartoon character by beating Toulouse, the giants of European rugby, the single most successful side of the professional era, and they did so in some style. After Friday evening's defeat, Glasgow will return to Toulouse next Saturday for the first time since the biggest upset in European Cup history, searching for a repeat performance. Here's how the official Heineken Cup website, ercrugby.com, previewed that 2009 match: "The Scottish outfit have lost all four matches in this season's competition and many will expect maximum points for Guy Novs' experienced side to secure a place in the last eight."

No-one gave Glasgow any better chance. Not only had Sean Lineen's lot lost every match in Europe that season but Toulouse had won every game including a 22-16 victory at Firhill. Glasgow had lost 43- 17 on their only previous visit to Stade Ernest Wallon and had never recorded a European win in France. It seemed unlikely that they would break that duck but the Glasgow players took heart from a previous match in Bath where they somehow scored five tries and still lost.
