GIVEN the party's reputation for living on the dark side, it takes a brave Tory to praise vampires. And it takes a clever one to prove that blood-suckers reveal evidence of our innate social altruism. David Willets - he of the 'Two Brains' nickname - is therefore clearly very brave and very clever indeed.

Willets displayed both qualities in abundance last week in a lecture which further challenged those Tory foot soldiers who are fed up with attempts to turn the Conservatives into the "cuddly" party.
