None of the Passion has Gone As Mccoist Revisits Parkhead

Summary

BY THE side of one of Murray Park's indoor pitches, Ally McCoist sniggers in typical fashion as he regales. "I remember getting brought down, and I was definitely brought down, before we get any further, although it might have been dubious to Celtic. It was in a New Year's Old Firm game and just out of the corner of my eye, the referee pointed to the penalty spot and as I am lying in the mud I've got Peter Grant, Paul McStay, who's the nicest guy in the world by the way, so I thought 'okay, I must have done something to upset him. I've maybe overstepped the mark', and then there's big Gordon Marshall. The three of them leaning over me, pointing, calling me all the cheating so-and-sos of the day and I just looked up at them and said. 'Happy New Year, lads'. It's the nearest Paul came to putting one on my chin."

No new year this time, only fresh beginnings. It's the same old resolutions, though. To get one over the Glasgow rivals. As a player, McCoist managed it with almost metronomic regularity. More often than not there were goals or wins to celebrate. From his debut Old Firm match at Celtic Park, in 1983, when he scored in a matter of seconds (he won't tell you but he went on to lose that day), to his goal in his final derby in the East End of the city 15 years later (which helped them to victory in that Scottish Cup semi- final, a week before his Old Firm swansong at Ibrox, when he celebrated another win), he amassed a tally of 27 goals, which stands equal to that of Jimmy McGrory. He didn't always triumph but he always thrived on the theatre and passion of the occasion. And he can't wait to sample it all over again, as Rangers assistant coach.
