CAN alcohol ever be good for your health? A few weeks ago, my father suffered a stroke. Chatting with him in hospital during his recovery, I was curious how much doctors would allow him to drink once he left their care. "Oh, it's marvellous, Will," he replied. "They've told me I can drink up to 21 units a week. That works out as ten pints."

"Well, I wouldn't advise a return to Bishops Finger just yet," I told him as the nurse arrived to check his blood pressure. We eventually agreed that from now on Dad's real-ale habit should be limited to a few half-pints.
