FOR many Russians it was a week of funerals, mourning and horrified disbelief. The reaction of Vladimir Putin to the deaths in Beslan, however, has been rather different: to go on the offensive.

The Russian president ordered his country's Federal Security Service to offer an unprecedented reward of 300 million rubles (GBP 5.7m) for information that could help "neutralise" Shamil Basayev, the Chechen warlord said to have masterminded the school hostage siege in which more than 300 people died, and of separatist former Chechen president Aslan Maskhadov.
