THE weather gods were not so much smiling down yesterday afternoon as beaming their broadest grin as the IRB sevens circus set up its big top at Murrayfield. There was plenty to smile about. Not only were the 11,692 crowd entertained by some cracking good rugby but the results weren't too shabby either, with Scotland hammering Australia, losing by the narrowest of margins to a strong South African side and then facing Argentina in the last, crucial match of the day.

The Scots did just enough to scrape through after earning a fraught draw against the Pumas, though not without some help from the referee, who sent three Argentines to the sidelines. The draw proved enough to earn Scotland their place in the cup quarter- finals on points difference, where they will meet New Zealand today.
