Mad for It

Summary

FUERZABRUTA is not only one of the biggest shows the Fringe has ever seen, its Edinburgh run marks the biggest moment in creator Diqui James' career. Considering the last production James was responsible for was De La Guarda's smash hit Villa Villa, which toured the world for more than 13 years and famously snatched audience members up into the air, that's really saying something. "I've been dreaming of this since I was a teenager," says the 42- year-old director of the Argentinian turbo-charged spectacle that has descended on Leith for the next five weeks. "It just blows my mind. If I had come to this show when I was a teenager with my friends, I think I would have gone crazy. Ever since I started out, the show that I wanted to make was the one that I wanted to see. With Fuerzabruta, I'm closer than ever to that show."

Though it has been in existence for two years, reopening London's Roundhouse last summer to rave reviews and ecstatic - if slightly soggy - audiences, never before has Fuerzabruta been mounted on such a grand scale. This is a seriously ambitious show. The 12 performers will break through walls and closed doors. They will slither around in a custom-made swimming pool that descends over the audience, who are standing and free to move around throughout the show. The original swimming pool was slashed by narcotics police following a recent run in Bogota, Colombia, but in true Fuerzabruta style another was built in just three days in Buenos Aires and flown over. Each performance uses 2,000 litres of water. The tent in which all of this action will take place is so enormous it can hold an audience of 1,200, four 16-metre trucks are needed to transport it, and its roof can support 21 tonnes.
