Summary
THE nation reacted with horror yesterday at the publication of shameful images of British soldiers abusing an Iraqi prisoner. The man, reported to be a suspected thief, was shown being kicked and jabbed with a rifle butt in the back of an Army truck. As a final indignity, one soldier urinated on the man as he sat defenceless, with a hood over his face and his hands tied behind his back. According to one of the soldiers, the Iraqi was then thrown out of the back of the moving truck and left to die.
Gen Sir Michael Jackson was absolutely right when he said that the soldiers involved "are not fit to wear the Queen's uniform", and the condemnation was joined by the Prime Minister and others across the world. Following other photographs showing serial abuse of prisoners in US prison camps in Iraq, this apparent proof of torture and humiliation techniques used by soldiers of the Queen's Lancashire Regiment threatens to blow apart the campaign to win the "hearts and minds" of the Iraqis. In the continued absence of weapons of mass destruction, it also significantly undermines one of the few remaining justifications for the war - to bring peace and security to people terrorised for decades by Saddam Hussein.See the full content of this document
