ENERGY minister Mike O'Brien has threatened to reduce the time that North Sea oil fields can remain dormant, heaping further pressure on oil majors to sell their ageing UK assets to the new breed of exploration firms.

At a meeting last week of the oil industry task force PILOT, O'Brien said any field where no wells have been drilled for two years could be taken back into government hands.
