BRITISH athletics bosses had come to Beijing predicting five medals. After a fruitless final night in the Bird's Nest Stadium, the track and field athletes will leave with four.

Talking to the media afterwards, both the men's and women's 4x400m teams expressed disappointment at not claiming a place on the rostrum, while Lisa Dobriskey cut a forlorn figure as she wept at her missed opportunity in the 1,500m. All had started their races believing they could medal - the men's relay side saying they had even considered silver "a shoo-in" after their qualifying performance - but the best they could muster was fourth.
