Summary
MANY years ago a young, athletic prop with the handling skills of a geisha girl and the determination of a mule emerged from Dundee HSFP and became the backbone of the Scottish scrum for the best part of a decade. That man was Tom Smith and, while the two-time Lions tourist possesses an intimidating reputation, Dundee's latest rugby export, Alasdair Dickinson, has a better chance than most of emulating the recently-retired front-row exponent. Like Smith, the Edinburgh prop is not built along traditional lines for an anchorman, and sports a figure that is altogether more athletic. Dickinson came through the ranks playing tight-head prop, a sub- species of the forward genus often portrayed as the dinosaurs of the front row. Naturally, nothing is further from the truth, as a chat with the personable youngster confirms.
"I'd like to think that playing tight-head is not all about size, but about body position and strength. I don't want to be seen as nothing more than a big lump, I want to be effective about the park, too."See the full content of this document
