IT WAS a turgid affair at Hampden, an awful spectacle for those 45,000 fanatics who turned up and behaved as if it was vintage football they were watching. The quality is hardly relevant, though. Not when Scotland have at last managed to win a game after failing to do so in their previous seven attempts, not when the points gained here still give them a mathematical hope of a place in the World Cup play-offs.
Christian Dailly, who replaced the injured Jackie McNamara in the first half, scored the opening goal just after the half-time break and when things were beginning to get a little sweaty for Scotland, another substitute, James McFadden, ensured that this would be a rare day of success for the national team.
