BACK in 1965 the Mercedes-Benz S-Class became the first car fitted with three-point seatbelts as standard. Thirteen years later it became the first with anti-lock brakes as standard, then a year later it pioneered the airbag.

The latest S-Class, which arrived in UK showrooms in March, features what is apparently the next big thing in automotive safety: a complete accident management system.
