THOUSANDS of Incapacity Benefit claimants face losing their handouts as the government ratchets up its campaign to crack down on those failing to work on mental health grounds.
Work and pensions secretary John Hutton has targeted claimants with mental illness as a key element among drastic plans to cut the GBP 13bn bill for sickness benefits paid to 2.7 million people every year. The Department for Work and Pensions has been appalled by the revelation that 40 per cent of IB claimants are suffering from mental conditions such as schizophrenia, stress and anxiety.
