Country Strife

Summary


Over the course of the day, I've counted five vehicles drive past my office window. Three of them were tractors. Directly outside there are blue skies, fields dotted with hay bales and not another person in sight. This town mouse has become a country mouse, but despite the scenery I'm fast realising that rural living ain't necessarily green living.

The first hint came during the unpacking marathon. Where was my recycling box for card and paper? Don't tell me they don't do kerbside recycling in the Borders? There are only so many empty wine bottles I can fit into my bike panniers. Further investigation revealed that kerbside collections do exist (via binbags rather than boxes) for paper, card, tins and plastic bottles, but not glass. Oh well, I'll just have to buy a craft kit and spend the winter months turning glass jars into hand-decorated candle holders. As for the grass cuttings, the council doesn't want them. More fool them, I say, as they could turn them into compost, use them to fertilise the municipal flowerbeds and win lots of 'beautiful village' awards.
