Summary


SUNDAY morning on Leith Links. The wind blows a gale through the allotments. The dead heads of sunflowers bow and drop off. Ma Ramaswamy reaches a tiny, expert hand through the wire fence that separates us from the rows of sheds. She plucks the last of someone's raspberry crop, withdraws, and munches on the spot. We move to the next plot.

My parents are visiting and this is Ma Ramaswamy's first time in Leith. She is beyond excited. I can always tell when she is on good form because she starts scaling fences and stealing cuttings from people's gardens. Or allotments. After she has gone, I notice that in every plant pot in my flat a suspicious green shoot has appeared, poking out of freshly pressed soil. The detective in me knows immediately who is behind this green-fingered crime.
