Chance of a Lifetime

Summary

Maybe you're squeamish. Perhaps you think you don't qualify. Or it could just be something you've thought about, but haven't got round to doing. Giving blood rarely comes top of people's 'to do' lists, despite the fact that the majority of us are in good health and would scarcely miss a pint of it. Only 6 per cent of those who are able to give blood actually do so.

A national appeal is always effective in mustering volunteers, but beyond that there is always a donor shortage. Since blood can only be stored for two weeks, the demand is ongoing: the National Blood Service requires a whopping 10,000 donations daily to meet its needs. Our many misconceptions about giving blood are part of the problem. For instance, a body piercing, tattoo or semi-permanent make-up doesn't mean you can't give blood - you just have to wait a year to do so. Having acupuncture or electrolysis is permitted, and asthma sufferers are also able to give blood, provided their condition is mild and controlled by inhaler only.
