Business Comment: Chameleon Iomart Shows Value of Hi-Tech Versatility

Summary


CONGRATULATIONS to Iomart, the Glasgow IT company which reported its maiden pre-tax profit last week. Iomart is the first of the crop of Scottish technology companies which floated in 1999 and 2000 to show it can make money as well as burn it.

Chairman Nick Kuenssberg gets irritated when journalists accuse the company of having changed its strategy again and again, so I will resist the temptation. Just to recap, however, it started out as an internet service provider, then became a telecoms company challenging BT, then turned into a security software business before buying an internet service company in Lancashire.
