CARRIE JONES is a pseudonym. Since I cannot tell you her name, let me describe her, make her more real. She is a middle-class woman in her 40s with light, soft, baby-fine hair. Blue eyes. No make-up. She wears a flared denim skirt, a black jumper, thick black tights and little flat black shoes with a strap. She could be a primary schoolteacher, or the Guide leader at your local hall. Her manner is very kindly. Not nervous, exactly, but it is clear she is a woman who does not like confrontation - that will be important. Her most rebellious act to date has been to write a book about sex. It is a book that has the potential to explode her life into sharp fragments that will rain down, tearing up her comfortable but unhappy existence.

Cutting Up Playgirl is a 'cheerful memoir of sexual disappointment'. In the context of Carrie, 'cheerful' seems an important word - very British and stoical. Do you wonder why I emphasise her sensible, conventional exterior? Because she challenges subconscious, celluloid ideas about sex; the idea that only the young and glamorous care about sex (or worse - that only the young and glamorous are entitled to care). Women in corsets and high heels, with lips slashed crimson as though stained with the juice of crushed strawberries. Jones thinks there are two women inside her: Respectable Carrie and Dirty Carrie. Neither is happy.
