A NEW year heralds a sudden rush of optimism, a tendency to believe that things can only get better. But a widespread sense of unease is threatening to make it a nervous start to 2011 for the banks, the housing sector, retailers and, well, just about all of us.
The VAT rise, coming in this week, will have distorted the retail sales figures for December which were already struggling for any meaningful comparison with December 2009 due to the bad weather, but the common view is that retailers will have a tough few weeks and months with the probability of profits warnings and even a few casualties on the way.See the full content of this document
