IT IS funny the moments you recall vividly from a game played 40 years ago. I'll treasure countless great memories of representing Scotland that seemingly now mythical afternoon we beat world champions England 3-2 at Wembley. But a simple one I place alongside my goal, the victory or the wild celebrations and real sense of achievement afterwards.

That lunchtime our team bus could only edge along Wembley Way, forced to weave slowly around thousands of Scotland supporters who thronged towards it, decked out in tartan tammies, kilts and all sorts. As the famous twin towers and the steps below them came into focus, I looked out and my eye was drawn to a point halfway up, where the faces thinned out. There sat my dad, who spotted me right away and gave this beaming smile then frantically waved and gave me the thumbs-up sign. He couldn't get to many games so it made my afternoon. I had a feeling then something special could be in the offing.
