I'VE BEEN mountaineering since the age of 16 but in 1999, when I was 29, I was in a very serious accident on Les Droites, a 4,000m peak in the French Alps. My climbing partner, Jamie Fisher, and I were trapped at the summit for five days and five nights by a storm. It was a pretty horrific ordeal at the end of which, when we were finally rescued by helicopter, it was sadly too late for Jamie and very nearly too late for me too.
